London Eye: it takes 90 minutes, not 30
Your ticket time is when you join the queue, not when you board. Here's how long a visit really takes, what each ticket costs, and when a free view beats the ride.
Visitor information checked 17 October 2026 · prices and hours change
The video gives you the verdict and the viewpoints in under five minutes. This page has the numbers that change — prices, hours, rules — and the map pins.
Worth it? For a first visit on a clear day, yes — thirty unhurried minutes that show you how London fits together, and almost anyone can do it. Check the forecast the day before: low cloud hides the view, and the Booking Guarantee lets you move a standard ticket for free.
Skip it if you're on a tight budget. The Sky Garden in the City is free if you book, and Westminster Bridge and the Golden Jubilee Bridges give you the Eye itself for nothing.
Five mistakes people make here
- Arriving at your ticket time and expecting to boardYour ticketed time is when you join the queue. You can't join before it, and there's a 15-minute grace period if you're late.
- Allowing 30 minutesThe ride is about 30 minutes, but the Standard queue is around 20–30 minutes on a quiet day and an hour or more at peak, plus a security check. Allow about an hour to an hour and a half door to door (our estimate), more at peak.
- Bringing a suitcase or a big rucksackLarge bags, suitcases and rucksacks can't go on board. Storage at the ticket office is £5 per item and has to be collected by 7pm.
- Riding before finding a toiletThere are no toilets on the ride. Use the ones in the ticket office in County Hall first.
- Assuming New Year's Eve is a free-for-allThe Mayor's fireworks are centred on the Eye, and you can't attend them without a ticket — even just to watch. See the official link below.

On the day
Day, sunset or night — and the river cruise
The ride is the same 30 minutes whenever you go; what changes is the light and the queue. Clear daylight gives you the furthest view — the operator says Windsor Castle on a clear day. Evening rides catch the city lights, and the quietest slots are early and late.
The River Cruise is a 40-minute circular trip from London Eye Pier, right next to the wheel, leaving at 45 minutes past each hour, with live commentary. It passes Big Ben, St Paul's, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and HMS Belfast. If you buy the combo, book the cruise time first, then the Eye.
Dated events on the official calendar: Fright on the Thames, 24 October – 1 November 2026 (7pm daily); Santa in the Sky, selected dates 21 November – 24 December.
New Year's Eve
The Mayor's fireworks are centred on the Eye, and you need a ticket to watch. Tickets are sold only through Ticketmaster, up to four per buyer, priced £20–£55 depending on the viewing area and whether you have a London postcode. The first batch goes on sale at 12 noon on Friday 23 October 2026.
